Careers Conference's workplace tours are designed to give participants a chance to view work places and learn about employment and education opportunities from employers right in their places of work and business. This provides firsthand knowledge that can be carried back to your clients or students.


Tours allow you to get out of your classroom or office and get into the work world. Tours at the conference are extremely popular and often fill up quickly.

Madison Highlights Tour

Take in the sights of Madison on a comfortable, climate-controlled trolley! Careers Conference 2009 attendees have an opportunity to take a customized tour of Madison. First, take a tour of the Olbrich Botanical Gardens, a place dedicated to the creation, conservation, and interpretation of gardens and plant collections hardy to the American Midwest or native to the world's tropical forests. This tour will highlight diverse plant and animal life as you stroll through Olbrich's Bolz Conservatory guided by Olbrich's Observatory Staff and have the opportunity to ask questions of the professional staff. Discover some of the other wonders of Madison as the tour continues through the city with a second stop at our State Capitol Building. Enjoy a tour of the capitol building while learning about the history of the building, including the devastating 1904 fire that eventually gave rise to the building you see today. Finally, ride to the beautiful UW-Madison Campus and appreciate a tour provided by expert guides from the UW-Madison Visitor's Center. You'll also be making a stop at UW-Madison's Kohl Center, to see the Chihuly Glass artwork, and Babcock Hall, a favorite spot on campus where you can try some UW-Madison made ice cream and do a little "dairy" shopping. If your family is traveling with you, this is a great way to spend time together, or for them to explore Madison while you attend other Monday events.

Camp Randall, UW-Madison

The University of Wisconsin – Madison Athletic Department will host a tour to Camp Randall Stadium. The stadium houses the Athletic Department offices, the Athletic Operations Building, indoor practice areas, training rooms, a media center, and a study center for student athletes, as well as a display of football memorabilia. During this tour you will have the opportunity to interact with Unit Directors from a number of these offices who will speak about their units and staffing needs.

Glass Nickel Pizza

Madison residents Brian Glassel and Tim Nicholson dreamed of owning their own pizza restaurant, as both had worked in pizza places for the majority of their teenage lives. They believed their passion for good, fresh food and great service was needed in Madison, and in November, 1997, the original Glass Nickel opened its doors. This successful business currently has five locations with a sixth about to open in Green Bay, WI. Tour Glass Nickel to hear firsthand how a restaurant with a handful of employees grew to have six locations, five of which are independently owned by previous employees who had a desire to replicate the restaurant’s success. Dean and St. Mary’s Cardiac Center

On this tour of Dean & St. Mary’s Cardiac Center, participants will have the opportunity to see the brand new and innovative Cardiac Center. The Cardiac Center includes two 30-bed intermediate care units that offer 24-hour telemetry monitoring, a 12-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit and 15-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Those on the tour will also see the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Pulmonary Rehabilitation areas in the new St. Mary's inpatient building. In addition, they'll get a chance to see the revolutionary new 64-slice CT (computed tomography) scanner. St. Mary's is the first hospital in Madison with this technology. Finally, there will be a tour of the new medical building, where participants will see the non-invasive testing that goes on, like nuclear cardiology. Dean & St. Mary's has the largest cardiac surgery program in Madison (based on overall numbers of cases) and one of the top-ranked programs in the state (based on its low complication rates).
