C10 Pathways to Construction Trades (Showcase Program) [P, A] DIV

Pathways to Construction Trades (PaCT) is a local partnership that addresses the impending shortage of construction workers and aims to increase the number of minorities entering the industry through the development of a short-term technical training program in construction and green skills. It integrates home language instruction in the construction trades and math through the delivery of contextualized teaching in Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language instruction for low-skilled displaced workers. The program, funded by a Department of Education FIPSE grant, provides participants with skill development in construction, information on career pathways, and assistance in planning education. Repeats as Roundtable 75.

C34 Challenge Day: The Personal Career Journey (Showcase Program) [All] CLUS

When did you create your last career plan? What if you had the chance to meet with someone who is achieving the goal you have? What if you “really knew” what it took to get to the top? Based on the premise of MTV’s hit show, “If You Really Knew Me…,” Penn State Fayette launched a Career Challenge Day in six local high schools to help students explore these questions. Students meet in “pods” run by university student mentors to discover career options through activities and meetings with employers and alumni. The Center for Experiential Education staff will share best practices and lessons learned with attention to details such as effective internal and external collaboration, peer mentor programs, and program funding.

C91 Improving Career & Technical Education Through Statewide Use of Technical Skill Assessments (Showcase Program) [H, P, A] CTE

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System and the Minnesota Department of Education launched a collaborative project focused on the assessment of technical skills in Minnesota’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.  The project developed an assessment system that provides teachers and faculty with accurate, useful information about common core competencies by career pathway and student technical skill achievement. The assessment system provides information that informs program improvement and communicates the value of CTE in preparing students for college and careers to employers and policymakers.  This session will provide an overview of the process used to identify assessments by career pathway, gather and report results, and plan and deliver professional development to teachers and faculty to improve their skills to engage in data-driven instructional improvement.
