SUMMARY

Pinnacle Charter High School uses Internet-based instructional technology to deliver content in the academic core of language arts, social studies, science, and math.

Reasons for Practice

The academic program at Pinnacle Charter High School was developed to provide an opportunity for students who had not found success in the traditional school system. Students who gravitate to this type of instructional environment are often deficient in both credits earned and academic skill development. Through the use of computer-assisted, Web-based instruction, it is possible to meet a wide range of academic needs in an instructionally sound and cost-effective manner. Students participating in the academic core receive direct instruction via Web-based lessons and instructional support by certified teachers in a computer lab setting. This approach has proven to be highly effective because it provides curricular flexibility and personal attention. Instructional units mirror the half-credit units offered in other area high schools in order to provide a smooth transfer from school to school when a student needs to change environments.

Length of Time in Effect

Pinnacle Charter High School has used Web-based instruction since 2000. Prior to this, the core academic subjects were taught using computer-based instructional programs that were purchased from national curriculum providers.

FULL DESCRIPTION

Pinnacle Charter High School (PCHS) uses computer technology to provide instruction in the core academic subjects to its students. Using the Internet as the delivery medium, PCHS has developed a series of academic courses that students essentially login to access. All of the courses have been developed using the Arizona State Academic Standards as the framework for course content. Each of the core academic subjects is divided into two half-credit units of instruction. Students are given two courses at a time to work on for a 36-day grading cycle.

The chain of events for a typical student may include the following:

  • Student enrolls at PCHS. PCHS offers open enrollment, so this may be at any time during the school year.
  • Student begins classes at the PCHS campus 48 hours later. Processing time averages two business days.
  • PCHS classrooms are 25 stations computer labs. Each classroom has a teacher and an assistant that is shared between classrooms. The student is assigned to a computer and given login information. This is day one of the 36-day cycle for this student.
  • Each of the students in the classroom is given an individual academic plan. The academic plan is an outline of the courses that they are required to take for graduation. Because students come to PCHS at different points in their academic career, all of the students in the classroom could be assigned to different courses.
  • The student works on his two academic courses throughout the day. Besides the physical classroom teacher, each student has two other teachers that they interact with virtually through their two academic courses.
  • If the student has Internet capabilities at home, he may also chose to work on his material from home. Should the student finish his coursework prior to the end of the 36-day cycle, he will be given his final exam and assigned the next course in his individual academic plan.
ADVICE FOR OTHERS

The development of a Web-based instructional program will take time, patience, persistence, and planning. If a school or district is looking toward implementing something of this magnitude, research your options and talk with other school operators who have completed such a task.
