SUMMARY

Pinnacle Charter High School assists students in the transition to post-high school life through a cooperative education program called the World of Work.

Reasons for Practice

The World of Work program was implemented to assist Pinnacle Charter High School students in their transition to post-high school endeavors. Pinnacle students who have not been successful in traditional schools are often interested in entering the workplace or community college after graduation. The World of Work allows these students to complete a cooperative education placement rather than enroll in non-workplace elective subjects.

Length of Time in Effect

The World of Work program was launched in 1996.

FULL DESCRIPTION

THE WORLD OF Work is a cooperative education program that combines classroom theory with supervised work experience. Students have the opportunity to earn high school credit for planned growth in a job that is related to their career goals. A joint agreement is set up between the employer, the school, and the student in order to facilitate this process.

At Pinnacle Charter High School, the World of Work is available to seniors. Students must satisfy specific requirements in order to enroll in the program. A state-certified vocational education instructor teaches the classroom component of the program, and course content is based on the Arizona Vocational and Technical Education competencies. In addition, the school's cooperative education coordinator meets with students to determine their eligibility for placements. The coordinator then helps them locate suitable positions that relate to their field of interest. Students who already have jobs relevant to their course work may obtain permission from their employers to have the work experience count for co-op credit.

  1. Offered a cost-effective screening program for recruiting highly qualified students.
  2. Gains motivated, enthusiastic employees whose work is evaluated and translated into high school credits.
  3. Experiences less employee turnover through contact with faculty-coordinator and cooperative education staff.
  4. Provided with chance to communicate business and industry needs to the high school.
  5. Experiences lower recruiting and training costs with trained co-op students who are able to move into more permanent positions.

What are the Benefits to the School?

  1. Experiences higher retention rate since students see relevance of education to job requirements.
  2. Receives current input from business concerning labor market conditions with implications for course content and placement opportunities.
  3. Relationships with business community are enhanced.
  4. Utilizes the skill and knowledge of outstanding individuals in business in the training of students.
ADVICE FOR OTHERS

If students are to become fully participating and contributing members of society, then they should be given the opportunity to participate in a World of Work program. The World of Work cooperative education program is a means of implementing an instructional plan that effectively brings about what is best for students. This type of program teaches students about work by studying about it, observing it, and then doing it.
