STUDENT VOICES
Pao Ly Vang, Suwan Keo, AnJali Singh

What is soil? This is the question that Suwan Keo, AnJali Singh, and Pao Ly Vang of CART pursued during their semester-long project Soil Check. The three students wanted to learn specifically about the characteristics of soil that benefit plants. Their inquiry, however, was not purely academic. AnJali, Pao, and Suwan hoped to ensure the success of a native garden that was being developed by students and community members for the purpose of learning about California native plants.

Working with soil scientist Brent Roath of the Sierra National Forest, the three learned to observe, sample, and analyze soil. In addition, they conducted research on soil structure, practices that impact soil quality, and plant needs. Pao, AnJali, and Suwan documented their progress, and they presented their methods at three points during the semester. To share their Soil Check experience, view their class presentations below:
