Perspectives Charter School

Just look at me . . .
I'm a Mexican,
Taco eating,
Fast-talking,
Dark skinned looking,
Spoiled acting,
Wrangler wearing,
Long hair cutting,
Spanish as a 1st language speaking,
Cumbia dancing,
Crossed the border running,
River swimming,
Knowledge searching . . .
Minority.

Now look at me . . .
You see what you see, because you want to see.

But look at me, for what I want to be.
Looking, searching, feeling myself,
Pulling, deeply, loving myself.

I scream,
I pound,
I cry,
I yell,

You see,
You laugh,
You turn,
You bail.
Just look at me . . .
I hate that I'm small,
I'd rather be tall, so that all you can do is,
Just look at me.


Just look . . .
Look inside.
I hate that
You look,
You see,
You talk,
You smile.
I stare,
I glare,
I run a mile.

You say my eyes roll back?
My finger snaps?
My head rolls?
And my eyes are cold?

You say that when I'm vicious
I scream and pout? All awhile my fingers out?!

I'm mean and I'm ugly, I'm spoiled and stubborn, but what do you know?

You haven't looked at me!


You haven't seen
the anger . . .
the rage. . .
The disappointment I felt.
You haven't looked at my eyes and seen me for me; you haven't talked, but walked away from me.

. . . and then the anger burst out, and I finally come out.

OH! NOW . . . look at me . . .

Now you see, now you see all I can be,

But don't worry it's not too late.

WHY?

Cause I don't discriminate.

Leticia wrote her poem above in response to the questions: "What do I represent?" and "What represents me?" Students enrolled in Perspectives Charter School's Social Justice class raised these questions during a classroom discussion about society's views of minorities and youth. At Leticia's suggestion, the class then explored the topic through a creative writing exercise. This poem represents Leticia's response.

Every other Wednesday, tenth grade students in Perspectives' Social Justice class spend a full day in the field with a social service agency. On alternating Wednesdays, community speakers visit class or students discuss issues related to their experiences.
