STUDENT VOICES Reasons I Chose to Become A Nurse Have you ever had a situation where you didn't know how to react? I did. Some people may not know that if you're at a scene of an incident, you have someone's life in your hands. I really don't worry about having someone's life in my hands since I attended the Health Careers Academy's Nursing Assistant Program at St. Clair TEC. It showed me how to react to many situationslike someone who is having a seizure or having a strokeand just how to help people who are in need.
Before I went to TEC, I was at a family reunion. I didn't really pay any attention to my cousin, but that day he really wasn't himself. We were playing volleyball when he began to look up at the sky. I asked him what was wrong, and he said, "Nothing. I'm just looking at the clouds." As soon as I turned to walk away, he fell to the ground and started to twitch really badly. At the time I didn't know what was going on, so I ran to find his dad. My uncle ran towards him as I followed, and he turned my cousin on his side. Then my uncle stuck his finger in his son's mouth so he wouldn't swallow his tongue. The ambulance arrived and took my cousin to the hospital. If that were to happen today, I would know exactly what to do. First, instead of running to get help, I would stay with the person who is having the seizure and assign someone to go and get help. Then I would loosen all tight clothes. I would put a pillow or something soft under his head and turn him on his side just in case he vomits. I would have never let my uncle put his finger in my cousin's mouth. I'm really glad I decided to go through the Nursing Assistant Program because one day my mom was complaining about her side going numb. She said that it felt like her eye and mouth were hanging. I told my dad that we had to take her into the emergency room because she was having a stroke. On the way to the hospital she told me to slow down because the truck was tipping. After she said that I was going so fast that I'm surprised I didn't get pulled over. When we got to the hospital they asked me what was wrong, and I told them she was having a stroke. They asked about the signs and symptoms she was having. After they examined her, they found out she did have a stroke. If it weren't for TEC and what I learned, it could have turned out a lot worse. While I was in the St. Clair Nursing Program, we helped out at the Marwood Nursing Home and Port Huron Hospital. While working in the nursing home, I realized that something you think is nothing, others might view differently. I also realized that I really liked helping people in need. If it weren't for St. Clair TEC Nursing Assistant Program, I wouldn't have learned how to assist someone who is having a seizure, having a stroke, or how to make people who are in need feel better. The Nursing Assistant Program really helped me with my decision on what I was going to do after graduation. I'm going to St. Clair Community College (SC4). I'm studying to become
a Registered Nurse. I like the fact that because of TEC I'm already
a certified nursing aide. They helped me out a lot.
