Vision and Goals:

The C3 (Creating Contextual Curriculum) Fellowship Program is a comprehensive staff development program for educators. A key component of the C3 Fellowship is to enhance teachers' workplace learning by moving from individual teacher participation to teacher-team involvement including academic and vocational educators. Three high school teams and one community college team (composed of representatives from two area colleges) will collaborate to address math and science standards and align coursework.

The C3 program is the first step in a three-tiered program based on contextual teaching and learning to be developed by the Business Education Compact in the next several years. The other two programs will include the C3 Administrators' Academy and the C3 Pre-Service Educators' Experience. The Business Education Compact will partner with the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory's Education and Work program to design and implement training associated with the C3 Fellowship Program.

Summary of Project Activities:

The C3 Fellowship program will help educators examine workplace processes and products. Each educator will create a contextual curriculum unit, and each school team will create a contextual teaching and learning action plan. Although some teachers may complete shorter internship experiences, most internships will last 8 weeks and will include a project. Team action plans will drive internship placements. BEC has an extensive database of participating businesses and community-based organizations in the Portland area. A five-day seminar (in addition to TeachNET's Summer Institute) will help participants get oriented to the workplace using All Aspects of the Industry and discuss techniques for using the experience to create contextual teaching and learning experiences.

After internships have been completed. School teams will create contextual teaching and learning action plans that address standards in Oregon's Certificate of Initial Mastery (CIM) and Certificate of Advanced Mastery (CAM). Saturday seminars during the school year will support teams as they revise and implement their action plans.
