Contextual teaching and learning resources

Association for Career and Technical Education (formerly the American Vocational Association) http://www.avaonline.org/

ACTE is a member organization that includes educators and business/industry representatives. If you are a member, the website provides access to ACTE’s publications Techniques, The School-to-Work Reporter, and Vocational Education Weekly. All three publications provide examples of local community-based learning programs for teachers and students.

This website provides articles, links, and other information about contextual teaching and learning. The site is maintained by Bowling Green State University and is a professional development project funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory http://www.nwrel.org

The Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory researches and evaluates school programs, produces curriculum materials, and conducts professional development on a number of topics. The site contains email links to NWREL staff for electronic consultation, searchable resource database, and a link to the "Library in the Sky," a database of educational resources and websites.

TeachNET teachnet

This site provides information about the TeachNET project. The site contains news from RCT sites, helpful information about workplace/community learning, Internet links, and a bulletin board for communicating with other TeachNET participants.

TERC http://www.terc.edu

TERC is internationally recognized for creating innovative curricula, fostering teacher professional development, pioneering creative uses of technology in education, contributing to educators' understanding of learning and teaching, and developing equitable opportunities for underserved learners. Through the website, users can order papers and curricula written by math and science teachers engaged in community-based learning experiences, and TERC research reports.

NCTM’s website provides a list of the NCTM standards, synopses of math-relevant research, education news, event announcements, and membership opportunities.

National Science Teachers Association http://www.nsta.org/

NSTA’s website contains a list of the science standards. The site also contains links to other math & science-related sites, legislative updates, and resources for teachers.

The National Staff Development Council http://www.nsdc.org

The National Staff Development Council studied and produced a list of staff development program standards that can help guide your staff development program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Standards are posted on the site.

Find out about NAB’s perspective on school improvement, their programs, and the many civic and business organizations involved with NAB.

National Association of Secondary School Principals http://www.nassp.org

Several years ago, NASSP published Breaking Ranks: Changing an American Institution. The publication outlined this member organization’s progressive approach to school improvement. NASSP includes both secondary and middle school administrators. Find out about NASSP and its publications through this site.

Through this site, learn about AFT’s resolution on redesigning low-achieving schools and profiles of schools engaged in an equitable school improvement process. Both programs feature schools that are making great improvements to student achievement. Many of these schools have developed teacher externship programs and view teacher professional development as a core element of their school improvement plan. Get information about these schools, contact the schools, and find out how your school can be recognized as a New American High School or a New Urban High School through this site.
